Join musical improv: Here’s how!

In this blog: Reminder, there’s a show this Saturday, an improvised musical at 7 pm at Old Major, hosted by indie group Plot Twist. There’s also a workshop where you can try musical improv in a safe, lowkey environment on Saturday at noon with Highwire Improv at St. Marks Church. Plus updates and status from the group.

Now for some updates:

We all met through musical improv!

Just a couple years ago, we only had a handful of workshops and shows a year. Now so many people have joined to perform, created their own musical improv shows, jams, and workshops. People like you have chosen to show up and start creating.

Join the circle, be brave, and own your own things! There are a collection of projects (workshops, jams, shows) run by different people. Our goal is to connect together as a group of improv peers!

Upcoming ideas in discussion (in volunteer’s chat):

  • Can we have a big group gathering to talk about musical improv dreams and plans, including the community, audiences, and students, and dream big together.
  • Could there be a big musical improv variety show, including new and established musical improvisers. Let us know if that sounds cool to you. It could be like a Sunday night thing!?
  • There’s still hope to have an intro to musical improv class before the end of the year. Details tbd. The class is the best way to get on stage for the narrative musicals, because a lot of what we teach is based on this. And there aren’t many narrative improv classes.
    • The path to teaching involves having taken spoken improv classes, improv scene/stage/musical experience, training in faciliation, and shadowing a musical improv class. Partner theaters also may have additional qualifications required. We have potential teachers lined up for 2025 and will be working to onboard for 2026. If you’re interested in teaching in the future or have a space/partner to host the class, hit reply!

Matchmaking form:

On that note, let’s work together! All you musical improv lovers, including those brand new or who’ve been around and want to get involved, we want to help you with your musical improv interests. No matter how involved you are with things, Do you want to perform, produce, teach, and/or something else? This is your chance to talk about it.

No obligation here, just want to know what sounds good to you. Musical improv has been growing in Baltimore recently, which is super exciting. We want to keep that trajectory, and this form will help with that. If you haven’t already, please fill out the form at your earliest convenience. Thank you all!

Group chats:

Musical Improv Chat, Volunteers. This is a peer group. That means peers can talk to each other. We don’t always agree, and that’s why it helps to have a place to talk openly and honestly!

Our goal is to be open and specific about how the group works, what resources we have, and how you can join. There’s no formal membership. If you’re willing to show up, we’re willing to figure out how to get you involved in the thing you want to do! Or point you to someone who can. Hit reply or join the chat and let us know what questions we can answer!
