About Us

Musical improv is any form of improv (usually comedy) involving music. This group will have occasional workshops where you do musical improv, we’ll attend musical improv shows, and we’ll form groups to put on our own shows.

Baltimore Musical Improv is a nonprofit project – fiscally hosted by the 501(c)(3) Fractured Atlas – dedicated to spreading the joy of musical improvisation in Baltimore.

Our group mission is to bring people together to experience the excitement and creativity of this unique art form. Whether you’re an experienced performer or just starting out, we have something for you.

Join our collective with regular meetups where participants like you connect with others who share their passion for musical improv. Our shows showcase the talents of our members and provide a platform for them to share their work with a supportive audience.

We also aim to offer workshops and other resources to help people develop their skills and take their musical improv to the next level.

At Baltimore Musical Improv, we believe in the power of community and collaboration. We are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can explore their musical potential and make new connections.

Whether you’re looking to perform, learn, or simply enjoy musical improv in a fun and friendly setting, we invite you to join us and become a part of the Baltimore musical improv community.

Mission

Baltimore Musical Improv is a non-profit project with a mission to foster more musical improv events, shows, and educational opportunities in the Baltimore region.

History

2017 — The team “Bad Karaoke Experience” (BKE) starts hosting monthly workshops, sharing what they learned from taking classes from DC-based and NYC-based musical improv instructors.

2020 — Everything is paused for the pandemic.

2023 — We started back up our monthly intro workshops

2024 — The BKE monthly workshops get organized under a new group, Baltimore Musical Improv. This new organization becomes a “fiscally sponsored” nonprofit, borrowing its nonprofit status from a parent group. We originally used Open Collective before they got shut down, and then we switched to Fractured Atlas. We start offering a “Musical Improv Level 1” class in Baltimore, growing our numbers. We start offering a second monthly workshop, focused on short-form musical improv.

2025 — We have so many more musical improvisers! We now have 6+ performing teams and shows. Baltimore has a musical improv show every few weeks (instead of every few months). We offer 4 multi-week intro classes a year, and a paid one-session intro workshop every other month. Our community is booming!
